In our parts of the world, Mental Health is still shrouded in a ‘that-which-must-not-be-named’ fog of mystery, stigmatization and discrimination.
Several misconceptions have plagued the fight to push mental health awareness to the forefront of modern medicine. From wrongly assuming that ‘mental health though destructive is ‘thankfully’ not that common’, to erroneously thinking ‘individuals struggling with mental health disorders are just making excuses for their weakness and need to stop whining, get up off the couch and go find a job’, mental illnesses have been maligned and the cycle of stigmatization and labelling has been difficult to break over the years.
The articles in this section are thus our little way of contributing to the clarion call that “Mental Health matters!” Samuel walks us through the effects of depression, bipolar disorder is detailed out by Peter, Sherrif weaves an interesting tale on the intricate and complex relationship between stress and depression and Uche goes to town with her musings on depression.
Each article promises to be a thought-provoking read and we hope this section motivates you to become a mental health advocate….Enjoy!
